Inmate dies after being found unresponsive at Richmond County detention center, GBI investigating
Augusta, GA – An inmate died after being found unresponsive inside a cell at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center on Sunday afternoon, prompting an independent investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, deputy jailers responded to the inmate at approximately 1:52 p.m. on July 5 after the individual was discovered unresponsive inside a cell at the detention center.
The inmate was transported to a local hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.
Following the incident, members of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division responded to the detention center. In accordance with standard protocol, the scene was secured, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested to conduct an independent investigation into the death.
Authorities have not released the inmate’s identity or the cause and manner of death. Officials said the investigation remains active and ongoing.
