Icy Conditions Lead to Multiple Road Closures in Richmond County

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Dangerous icy conditions have caused multiple road closures and hazardous driving conditions across Richmond County. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary, as numerous accidents and stalled vehicles have been reported throughout the area.

As of 11 a.m. Wednesday, the following roads are closed or impassable due to ice:

South Richmond County:

  • Peach Orchard Rd (Phinizy Rd to Tobacco Rd) – Closed in both directions due to icy conditions.
  • Deans Bridge Rd at Meadowbrook Dr – Closed.
  • Deans Bridge Rd Southbound at Hilson Rd – Closed.
  • Barton Chapel Rd at Old McDuffie Rd – Detours are required due to icy conditions, with road crews notified to install detour signs.
  • Windsor Spring Rd at Richmond Hill Rd Northbound – Icy conditions reported.
  • Tobacco Rd (Peach Orchard to Mike Padgett) – Closed due to ice on the roadway.

North Richmond County:

  • Walton Way Ext/Crane Ferry Rd – Impassable due to ice.
  • Wrightsboro Rd/Hickman Rd – Requires salting.
  • John C. Calhoun Expy/Washington Rd – Impassable.
  • Wrightsboro Rd (Summerville to Downtown) – Requires salting.
  • 800 Stevens Creek Rd – Ice on the roadway.
  • Belair Rd/Wrightsboro Rd – Vehicles unable to ascend due to ice on the hill.
  • Highland Ave/Hazel St – Ice on the roadway.
  • Boy Scout Rd at Lafayette Dr – Icy conditions reported.
  • Washington Rd/Beverly Heights Dr – Ice on the roadway.

Authorities are advising drivers to exercise extreme caution if they must be on the roads, recommending slow speeds and maintaining a significant distance between vehicles. Drivers should also ensure that their vehicles are stocked with emergency supplies, including phone chargers, blankets, water, and flashlights.
