Man Dies After Accidental Shooting in Augusta

Augusta, GA – A shooting on 15th Street in Augusta has claimed the life of 37-year-old Jermaine Habersham, who was fatally wounded on Sunday afternoon.

According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a call at 3:59 p.m. reporting a shooting in the 1500 block of 15th Street. Early details from officials indicate that the incident occurred when one man was showing a handgun to another, and the firearm was accidentally discharged, striking Habersham in the chest.

The suspect, whose identity has not been released, immediately transported the victim to Wellstar/MCG Hospital. Despite efforts to save him, Habersham was pronounced dead at 6:40 p.m. by Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death.

The handgun involved in the incident has been recovered, and authorities confirmed that the suspect is cooperating with investigators. No charges have been filed at this time as the investigation remains ongoing.
