WASHINGTON COUNTY, GA – A swift law enforcement response led to the arrest of a 22-year-old man from Augusta, Georgia, on multiple felony charges after he was found acting suspiciously near Washington State Prison on April 2nd.

At approximately 11:41 A.M., Washington County deputies received a report of a suspicious male carrying bags near the prison grounds. In response, deputies, alongside a Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) K9 unit, quickly converged on the area. By 12:05 P.M., the suspect was apprehended in a field located to the east of the prison.

Washington County Sheriff Joel Cochran praised the teamwork between his office and the GDC, noting that the swift action resulted in a timely and successful arrest. “The swift arrest was made possible through the teamwork and dedication of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the GDC personnel,” Sheriff Cochran stated. “We want those with ill intentions to understand that this collaboration and effort will persist. If you don’t want to spend a significant amount of time behind bars, stay out of Washington County if you’re planning to engage in illegal activities.”

The suspect, identified as Jamel Barnes, of Augusta, was arrested and charged with several offenses, including three counts of Possession of Controlled Substances with Intent to Distribute, Trading with Inmates Without Authorization from the Warden, and four counts of Possession of Items Prohibited by Inmates. Additionally, Barnes faces charges of Criminal Trespass and Giving a False Name.

Barnes is currently in custody awaiting further legal proceedings. Law enforcement officials are continuing to investigate the case, and authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant.
