Suspect Arrested in Augusta Shooting Death of 30-Year-Old Man

AUGUSTA, Ga. — A 19-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a 30-year-old man in Augusta over the weekend, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

The victim, identified as Davonta Lamar McCloud of Higdon Street, was found deceased following a shooting that took place early Saturday morning. According to the Richmond County Coroner’s Office, McCloud was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:07 a.m.

Deputies responded to the 1900 block of Higdon Street around 2:58 a.m. on Saturday after reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, they discovered McCloud and another man, later identified as Omar Andrews, both suffering from gunshot wounds inside a residence. Andrews was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening and was later released.

Ja Vyion Dae Quan Johnson, 19, was arrested on Tuesday for the murder of McCloud and the aggravated assault on Andrews. Johnson is currently being held at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center, according to officials. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

This incident marks the fifth homicide or suspicious death in Augusta since the beginning of the year, adding to a rising trend of violent crimes in the area. Additionally, two homicides have been reported in Aiken, with other deaths in Waynesboro, Sparta, and Monetta.

Authorities continue to urge the community to come forward with any information that could assist in the ongoing investigations.
