Lane Closures Suspended in Augusta Area to Ease Traffic for Golf Events

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced a temporary suspension of construction-related lane closures on key highways leading to Augusta from Wednesday, April 2 through Monday, April 14. The measure aims to accommodate the expected influx of traffic for major golf events in the region, providing a smoother and less congested travel experience for visitors and locals alike.

Lane closures will be paused on Interstate 20 (I-20) throughout the entirety of District 2, stretching from Covington to Augusta, as well as on Interstate 520. In addition, construction projects in Columbia and Richmond Counties, which serve as primary routes to the city, will also face lane closure restrictions. Projects on major state routes leading to Augusta in Burke, Emanuel, Jefferson, Jenkins, and McDuffie Counties will also be impacted.

“By suspending construction-related lane closures, we are working to ensure that traffic flows more smoothly and safely during this high-traffic period,” said Georgia DOT officials. “This suspension will help create a more efficient travel experience for those coming to Augusta for the events.”

In addition to the suspension of lane closures, Georgia DOT will be deploying HERO (Highway Emergency Response Operators) and CHAMP (Changeable Message Advisory Patrol) units to the Augusta area. These services are designed to assist with traffic-related incidents by clearing roads and providing help to stranded drivers. HERO and CHAMP units are equipped to handle tire changes, assist with minor maintenance issues, and provide critical support for incidents on interstate highways. Drivers can request a HERO or CHAMP unit by dialing 511.

While construction-related lane closures will be suspended during this period, travelers are advised that some long-term lane closures may still remain in place for safety reasons. Additionally, emergency or incident-related lane closures may occur at any time as necessary. Georgia DOT also emphasizes the importance of staying alert and following posted road signs, particularly in areas near ongoing construction zones.

“Even though the majority of construction closures are suspended, we encourage all drivers to remain vigilant and cautious while driving near work zones,” officials warned.

For up-to-date information about travel conditions across Georgia’s interstates and state routes, drivers can call 511 or visit www.511ga.org. The 511 service provides real-time updates on traffic conditions, incidents, lane closures, and delays caused by inclement weather, available 24/7.

The suspension of lane closures is part of Georgia DOT’s ongoing efforts to minimize disruptions for drivers and provide a safer and more efficient travel experience during the busy event season in Augusta.
