Jermaine Whirl Named Sole Finalist for Savannah State University Presidency

Augusta, Ga. – Jermaine Whirl, the president of Augusta Technical College, is set to take on a new challenge as he is named the sole finalist for the presidency of Savannah State University (SSU). The University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents made the announcement on Tuesday, marking the next step in Whirl’s distinguished career in higher education.

Whirl has served as president of Augusta Tech since 2020, where his leadership has led to significant improvements in both student enrollment and retention. Under his guidance, the institution saw record enrollment numbers for new first-year students last fall, along with a 20.3% increase in overall enrollment from fall 2021 to fall 2024.

“I am deeply honored to be named a finalist for the presidency of Savannah State University,” Whirl said in a statement. “Savannah State has a rich history of producing world-class artists, educators, scientists, military leaders, corporate executives, and public policy advocates. I look forward to working with the students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the greater Savannah community to continue the legacy of the state’s first public Historically Black College and University (HBCU).”

Whirl’s nearly two-decade-long career spans various roles in higher education, both in Georgia and his native South Carolina. His tenure in leadership positions has equipped him with the experience needed to guide institutions toward success, making him a prime candidate for SSU, which has a legacy of excellence and community impact.

Savannah State University, the oldest HBCU in Georgia, has long been an integral part of the state’s higher education landscape. With a commitment to providing access to education and cultivating leaders in diverse fields, SSU is poised to benefit from Whirl’s leadership if his appointment is finalized.

Whirl’s tenure at Augusta Tech has left a lasting impact, particularly in areas of student success and institutional growth. If confirmed, his move to SSU will mark the next chapter in his career, one that promises to continue his legacy of transformative leadership in higher education.
