Georgia DOT Continues Efforts to Clear Roads After Snowstorm, Warns of Black Ice

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is continuing its efforts to clear highways in the region following Tuesday’s snowstorm, even as much of the ice from the storm has melted.

Temperatures above freezing, combined with ongoing plowing and salting efforts, have helped dry many roadways. However, GDOT officials are cautioning that icy patches remain in some areas. Maintenance crews are working through the night in several regions, including Milledgeville, Dublin, and Louisville, to ensure roads remain clear and safe for travelers.

As temperatures are expected to dip below freezing overnight, there is a risk of black ice forming on road surfaces. Locations that are currently wet could freeze as the night progresses, making driving conditions hazardous. GDOT officials urge drivers to remain vigilant, especially on roads that appear wet, as they could be icy.

In addition to potential black ice, the snow and ice on the shoulders or sides of roads could melt onto travel lanes, refreezing overnight and creating further hazards.

Motorists are advised to exercise extra caution, particularly in areas where roads appear wet, as the conditions may be more treacherous than they appear.

As the winter weather continues to pose challenges, GDOT crews remain committed to ensuring safe travel throughout the state.
