Former Georgia House Representative Ben L. Harbin Dies at 61

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Richmond County Coroner’s Office is investigating the death of former Georgia House of Representative Ben L. Harbin, who passed away on the evening of April 30, 2025, at the age of 61.

Harbin was pronounced dead at 7:12 p.m. at The Fairfield Inn, located at 3023 1/2 Washington Road in Augusta. The cause of death has not been immediately released, and the investigation is ongoing.

A prominent figure in Georgia politics, Harbin represented the 118th district in the Georgia House of Representatives for over two decades. He was first elected in 1994 and served until his resignation in 2015. Throughout his time in office, Harbin was best known for his leadership role as chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, where he played a crucial part in shaping the state’s budget and financial policy.

Harbin’s tenure in the Georgia General Assembly ended when he resigned in July 2015, stepping down from his position. His departure came as a surprise to many, and the reasons behind his decision have remained private. Following his resignation, Harbin remained active in the community but stayed out of the political spotlight.

In a statement, Trey Allen, the Columbia County Commissioner for District 2, expressed his sorrow over Harbin’s passing. “I’m simply heartbroken,” said Allen. “Ben Harbin was a loving father, a dedicated public servant, and most of all, to a lucky few, a fearless friend. Our world is simply diminished for his loss. Prayers and blessings to those who loved him and the countless who’s days will be less bright in the absence of his smile and presence.”

Harbin’s legacy extends beyond his work in the state legislature. Colleagues and friends remember him as a dedicated public servant with a warm personality and a deep commitment to his community. His passing marks the end of an era for those who worked alongside him in Georgia’s Capitol, and many will remember him for both his professional achievements and his personal kindness.

As the investigation into his death continues, tributes have poured in from across the state, with many reflecting on Harbin’s influence and character both in and out of the political arena. The family has requested privacy during this difficult time.
