Fire Breaks Out at Charles B. Webster Detention Center Laundry Room, Quickly Contained

AUGUSTA, Ga. — A fire broke out at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center Thursday night, causing smoke inhalation concerns but no injuries. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office reported that the blaze started around 8:09 p.m. on April 24 in the facility’s laundry room, where a large commercial dryer caught fire.

Sprinkler systems in the laundry room activated, preventing the fire from spreading further. The Augusta-Richmond County Fire Department quickly responded to the scene and took control of the situation.

Several inmates were evaluated for smoke inhalation, but no serious injuries were reported. Inmates who were in the affected pods were evacuated and relocated to other secure areas within the detention center as a precaution. Additional resources were requested to ensure the safety and security of those inside the facility.

Deputies on the scene were also assessed for smoke exposure, although there were no reported injuries among first responders. Authorities emphasized that the quick response from both detention center staff and emergency personnel helped limit the damage and ensure everyone’s safety.

Sheriff Eugene Brantley, Chief Deputy Robert Sams, and Chief Lewis Blanchard of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office were present at the scene to oversee operations and assist with the emergency response. Despite the intensity of the fire, the swift efforts of the sprinkler system and first responders prevented a potentially more serious incident.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.
