Deputy Involved in Shooting on Glenn Hills Drive: Authorities Determine Use of Force Justified

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has released body camera footage from a critical officer-involved shooting that occurred on Glenn Hills Drive on March 13.

According to the sheriff’s office, the incident began when officers encountered the suspect, Brandon Hill. After being instructed to show his hands, Hill allegedly raised a firearm into the air. Deputies, including Deputy David Hopkins, repeatedly commanded Hill to comply. However, Hill then pointed the weapon directly at Deputy Hopkins. In response, Deputy Hopkins discharged his firearm, striking Hill in the chest.

Following the shooting, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office conducted an independent review of the incident. After assessing the evidence and reviewing body camera footage, authorities concluded that Deputy Hopkins’ use of force was justified. The review determined that the deputy acted in accordance with department policies and protocols.

As of Monday, Hill remains in critical condition at an area hospital. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, though the findings of the independent review have cleared Deputy Hopkins of any wrongdoing.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has emphasized that such incidents are subject to thorough investigation to ensure transparency and accountability. The release of the body camera footage was part of their commitment to providing clarity on the event.

The sheriff’s office also stressed the seriousness of the situation, as tensions between law enforcement and communities continue to be a subject of national conversation. The incident serves as a reminder of the high-stakes nature of law enforcement encounters, particularly when weapons are involved.

As the investigation continues, both the sheriff’s office and the public await further developments on the case.
