Dalton Man Kills Wife and Girlfriend in Separate Shootings Before Taking His Own Life

DALTON, Ga. — The Dalton Police Department is investigating a tragic triple homicide involving a husband, his wife, and his girlfriend at two separate locations in Dalton.

According to authorities, 37-year-old Kevin Andrew Akins shot and killed his wife, 35-year-old Rebeca Nicole Akins, inside her apartment on the evening of May 23. He then traveled to the home of his girlfriend, 33-year-old Cindel Mae Rhoden, where he fatally shot her before taking his own life.

Officers responded to Rebeca Akins’ residence shortly before 6 p.m. on Friday after coworkers expressed concern over not having heard from her in several days. Unable to contact anyone at the apartment, police were granted access by apartment staff and found Rebeca Akins deceased with an apparent gunshot wound to the head.

Police detectives quickly launched an investigation and reviewed surveillance footage showing Kevin Akins leaving the apartment early Wednesday morning, May 21. Their inquiry led them to a second apartment complex where Akins’ vehicle had been spotted.

In the early hours of Saturday, May 24, officers observed a man arrive at the second location and enter the apartment with a key. The man was identified as Cindel Mae Rhoden’s father, who had come to check on her after she had also gone missing for several days. After discovering Rhoden and Akins dead from gunshot wounds, he called 911.

The Dalton Police Department has confirmed that Kevin Akins was responsible for shooting Rhoden before taking his own life. Investigators continue to gather information to determine the motive.
