Community Honors Fallen Deputy Brandon Sikes, Supports Injured Deputy Gavin White

COLUMBIA COUNTY, GA – The Columbia County community continues to rally around Deputy Brandon Sikes, who tragically lost his life in a shooting during a traffic stop on Saturday evening, and his fellow deputy, Gavin White, who was injured in the same incident. While White was released from the hospital Thursday, the community has shown an outpouring of support for both deputies and their families, with many expressing their condolences through acts of kindness and remembrance.

In a moving show of solidarity, Augusta Preparatory School’s third graders and upper school chorus gathered Friday morning for a heartfelt memorial at the school’s flagpole, singing in honor of Deputy Sikes. Faculty, staff, and students participated in the ceremony, paying tribute to the fallen officer and celebrating his life.

Eric Hedinger, the Head of Schools at Augusta Preparatory, shared his thoughts on the impact Deputy Sikes had on the students. “Deputy Sikes influenced our students in a good way,” he said. “He was one who cared for them, their safety. He helped them understand that law enforcement officers are approachable. Today, we gather to honor him, celebrate his life, and reflect on the positive influence he had on our community and our young people.”

Hedinger also emphasized the importance of involving students in such memorials, allowing them to process the tragedy and gain a deeper understanding of its significance. “Involving students in this gives them ownership and understanding, as well as an opportunity for self-expression,” Hedinger explained. “It was crucial for us to do something meaningful for them. We didn’t want to limit our support to just one day. The students themselves asked if they could hold a memorial service, and we wanted to make that happen.”

The community’s support extends far beyond the walls of the school. Local businesses have also joined in honoring the deputies, displaying lowered bows, billboards, and flags to demonstrate their respect for law enforcement. Suzanne Lilly Honeymichael, the owner of Hardwood Floors and More, spoke about the importance of acknowledging the sacrifices made by first responders. “We all feel safe all the time and don’t always remember how much our service members, deputies, and EMTs put their lives on the line for us,” Honeymichael said. “Everyone should be mindful of how crucial their job is.”

Honeymichael, along with other workers from her business, plans to attend Deputy Sikes’ funeral on Monday. “It’s going to be a full service,” Honeymichael noted. “Many people will line the streets to show their support. It’s important for us to be there for the family and honor Deputy Sikes’ memory.”

As the community continues to mourn the loss of Deputy Sikes and support Deputy White in his recovery, the outpouring of compassion and remembrance serves as a reminder of the deep connection between law enforcement officers and the communities they protect.

Funeral services for Deputy Brandon Sikes are scheduled for Monday, and it is expected that many local residents will come together to pay their respects and show their unwavering support for the Sikes family.
