Community Comes Together to Support Sikes Family After Tragic Loss

APPLING, Ga. – The community is rallying behind the family of Deputy Brandon Sikes following his tragic death in an officer-involved shooting this past weekend. Local organization Shields and Ladders is leading efforts to raise donations and provide support during this difficult time.

Founded two years ago by Theopolis Knight, Shields and Ladders was created to assist first responder families facing unforeseen medical or financial emergencies. The organization has grown in scope, now offering a wide range of services to help these families when they need it most.

“It affects them a lot more because they’re used to giving assistance instead of receiving it,” Knight explained. “Working in law enforcement, I see that firsthand. They don’t always reach out when they need help.”

Knight and his team at Shields and Ladders work to cover the basic needs of families like that of Deputy Sikes, allowing them to focus on emotional and physical recovery. Whether it’s helping with transportation, providing meals, or offering companionship, the organization takes an individualized approach to every situation.

The goal is not only to provide immediate financial assistance but also to offer practical help, such as cleaning homes, mowing lawns, or running errands. Knight emphasized that the organization looks beyond typical donations, tailoring its support to meet the unique needs of each family.

Shields and Ladders has previously assisted other law enforcement families in the area, including Richmond County Deputy Kenneth Mercer, who was shot in the neck while on duty two years ago, and Washington County Deputy Gordon Alley, who became paralyzed after a car crash last year.

The effort to support the Sikes family is already underway, with the community stepping up in a variety of ways. “We have a meal train going on, and people are bringing food to us,” said Knight. “The community is responding very well. Some may not want to give money, but they want to help by providing meals or other services.”

For those looking to support the Sikes family, Shields and Ladders offers multiple avenues for contribution, including direct donations through their website. Knight encourages anyone interested in helping to reach out, whether through financial donations or by offering services to ease the burden on the grieving family.

As the community continues to mourn the loss of Deputy Sikes, the outpouring of support serves as a testament to the strength of the local bonds and the willingness to support those who serve and protect the community.
