Augusta Preservation Commission Discusses Future of Historic Old First Baptist Church

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The future of the Old First Baptist Church was the focal point during a recent meeting of the Augusta Preservation Commission. The church, a significant historical landmark in the downtown Historic District, has stood since 1902 and is known as the founding site of the Southern Baptist Convention. Its potential demolition has sparked heated debate among local residents and preservationists, with many rallying to keep the building intact.

The church, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, holds both architectural and cultural importance to the community. Several members of the congregation and the public attended the meeting in support of preserving the church, voicing their concerns about its possible demolition.

One of the attendees, Jayne Scott, shared her personal connection to the church, recalling her childhood visits with her grandmother. “It’s disappointing,” Scott said, “I think it’s exquisite architecture. We have beautiful memories, and I think we can use it for something extravagant.” She suggested alternative uses for the building, such as transforming it into a restaurant, ballroom, or space for dance classes, instead of tearing it down.

Eric Montgomery, the Executive Director of Historic Augusta, also expressed his concerns about the potential loss of the structure. He described the church as “the finest example of Mozart style in Augusta” and highlighted its long and rich history. Despite needing significant repairs, Montgomery emphasized the building’s historical value. “It would be a terrible loss,” he stated.

Scott also underscored the importance of preserving historical landmarks, stating, “It’s important that we hold on to as many historical markers, icons, statues, and buildings as we can. That’s part of our identity, it’s part of our culture.”

The meeting, originally scheduled to discuss the proposed demolition of the church, was postponed after the applicant for the demolition failed to appear. This delay means that the request for demolition will be addressed at a later date.

As the debate continues, it remains clear that the Old First Baptist Church holds a special place in the hearts of many in Augusta. The community’s efforts to preserve it highlight the ongoing struggle to balance modern development with the need to protect the historic and cultural treasures that define a city.
