Augusta Man Killed in Early Morning Shooting on Higdon Street

AUGUSTA, Ga. – A 30-year-old man was fatally shot early Saturday morning in Augusta, marking another violent incident in a growing wave of shootings in the region this year.

The Richmond County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Davonta Lamar McCloud, who was found at a residence in the 1900 block of Higdon Street. Deputies with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene at approximately 2:58 a.m. on January 27, 2025, where they discovered McCloud and another man, both of whom had been shot.

McCloud was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:07 a.m. by the coroner’s office. The second victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, sustained a non-life-threatening injury and was transported to a nearby hospital. After receiving treatment, the second victim was released later that morning.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and deputies have not yet disclosed any details about potential suspects or motives behind the attack.

This shooting marks the latest incident in a concerning string of violence in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) this year. The region has seen at least five murders or suspicious deaths in Augusta alone, as well as two homicides in Aiken, and one each in Waynesboro, Sparta, and Monetta.

Local authorities continue to investigate these incidents, urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in bringing those responsible to justice.

As the investigation unfolds, the community remains on edge, hoping for answers and an end to the rising violence in the area.
