Augusta Man Dies After Hit-and-Run Accident; Authorities Search for Vehicle

Augusta, GA – A hit-and-run incident in Augusta has left a 65-year-old man dead after he was struck while riding his moped on Sunday evening. The Richmond County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Duane Rutledge, of Augusta, was transported to Wellstar / MCG hospital following the collision at 13th Avenue and Martin Luther King Boulevard. He was pronounced dead at 8:48 a.m. on Monday.

According to authorities, the incident took place around 9:30 p.m. Sunday. Rutledge was struck by a vehicle and EMS crews quickly arrived at the scene, providing transportation to the hospital. Despite efforts to save him, Rutledge succumbed to his injuries early the following morning.

An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of death, as investigators continue their search for the vehicle involved in the fatal hit-and-run. Authorities are looking for a 2015-2020 Chevy Tahoe or Suburban with front-end damage. The vehicle was last seen traveling north on Martin Luther King Boulevard from 13th Avenue, and authorities believe it may have been involved in the incident.
