Augusta Implements New Downtown Safety Plan to Boost Security and Vibrancy
AUGUSTA, Ga. — A new downtown safety initiative is now underway in Augusta, aimed at creating a safer, more vibrant environment for residents, visitors, and businesses alike.
Starting this past weekend, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has deployed at least two deputies to every block along Broad Street on weekend nights, from 9 p.m. until 3:30 a.m. These officers come from various divisions, including road patrol and investigations, to provide a comprehensive law enforcement presence designed to reduce late-night crime and theft.
The move follows recent meetings between Sheriff Brantley and the Downtown Development Authority, where plans for a long-term safety strategy were discussed. Today, the sheriff’s office will hold a meeting with downtown business leaders to gather feedback and further refine the plan.
Colonel Bo Johnson, a spokesperson for the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, emphasized the importance of restoring public confidence in the downtown area. “The goal is to give folks the confidence that they can come back downtown and enjoy themselves,” Johnson said. “Bring your families and know that you’ll be safe. Visitors from out of town can enjoy the downtown area with peace of mind.”
Initial reactions from the community have been positive. Johnson noted that officers frequently encounter people expressing appreciation for the increased safety measures during weekend patrols.
The meeting with business leaders is scheduled for 2 p.m. today in the auditorium of the Old Fort Discovery Building on 7th Street.
