50501 Organization of Augusta Takes to the Streets on International Workers’ Day

Augusta, GA – The 50501 Organization of Augusta marked International Workers’ Day with a powerful demonstration advocating for workers’ rights and opposing recent union cuts. Formed in late March, the group has quickly gained momentum, drawing support from local community members and organizations. Their mission, represented by the number 50501, stands for 50 protests across 50 states, all united under a single movement.

One of the organization’s lead organizers, Lisa Wohlrab, explained the urgency behind the protest, which centered on the ongoing threat to collective bargaining rights for several unions, particularly within federal agencies. “The executive order that takes away collective bargaining from several unions and federal agencies, including the VA, is a significant concern,” Wohlrab said. “For 5052 veterans, this is crucial because we rely on VA workers to receive the care we need.”

In line with their commitment to support local causes, the organization also chose Golden Harvest, a local food bank, as the beneficiary of this protest’s donation drive. Participants were encouraged to contribute to the food bank, demonstrating the group’s dedication to addressing both national and local issues.

Despite their strong political and social stance, the 50501 Organization prides itself on being a non-partisan movement. Wohlrab emphasized this point, stating, “This is not about politics or party affiliation. It’s about upholding the Constitution, defending our rights, and opposing executive overreach.”

The protest also served as a chance for community members to come together, meet like-minded individuals, and share their concerns. Wohlrab noted the emotional impact these gatherings have on participants, saying, “It’s heartwarming to hear people say, ‘I’m not alone anymore.’ Many attendees have expressed how these events provide them with a sense of solidarity and community.”

Looking ahead, the organization is gearing up for its next major event on May 6, coinciding with D-Day. As the movement grows, so too does its commitment to advocating for workers and protecting constitutional rights.
